Composition

But have you really listened to those songs?

YOU ARE TAKEN TO another universe, another land, within the interlocking notes of Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s film scores, pulled away from your creaking wooden desk under the sparkly purple lamp until all that exists as far as you know are the universes of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and The Prestige and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as the one you’re creating on the page with your cramped left hand; and it is not just the exciting crash of cymbals and brass that sweeps you into ships and sailing or dark city streets and shadowed alleyways—no, it’s that subtler stuff that really gets you, the stuff composed so precisely to convey emotion, the stuff that reaches into hidden parts inside that you can only get to via music or nature, hidden parts that you only discover exist when there’s this flare of bluish-gold synesthetic feeling radiating from just below your heart that comes out in goose bumps; it’s the composition and combination of notes that not only reminds you of exactly where they come in the movie, but also for some reason make you envision an open and unclaimed field with tall grasses or a forest clearing, silently sunlit and golden, and it’s this feeling right here that drives the pencil so fast that your left hand is cramped and you have no choice but to switch hands to write—though it’s okay because you’ve been practicing—because the words and universe are coming out too fast from the music.
